All Shook Up

The erotic rock-club Milk opened with an enormous bang last October, with more than 1000 people jamming into the three-level, former Chinese restaurant. The rooms were thick with smoke, sweat, flamboyant clubbers, rock kids and a gaggle of puzzled salarymen who looked like they had expected a venue with the swank sleaze of Orange--but were ambushed instead by the hardcore rock band Wrench. Club producer Tomihiro Sato of Gold and Orange fame has created a perverse entertainment space--check out the open kitchen/bar where the adult toys are displayed and you'll see (maybe even feel) the vibrations.
Body, the club that according to the invitation, "has what Aoyama and Roppongi lack," just opened in Akasaka. It took me a while to realize what it is that Akasaka has: almost as many suits, ties and office-ladies as Otemachi, and more hostess bars and Korean BBQ than almost anywhere. Still, Body's a cozy club with soul DJs, a small dancefloor and friendly staff. Pity there's only one toilet, so be considerate and do your number twos elsewhere.
Over in "deficient" Aoyama, Shinkukan and Kamado owner Takeshi Takiuchi threw his annual "Shake It Up, Baby," birthday party at Shinkukan. It was wild, especially for a Sunday night. Even if "Shake it up, baby," are Takiuchi's only English words, it didn't seem to hamper the conversation, which flowed almost as freely as the champagne and tequila slammers. I don't see how a guy so little can drink so much! Afterwards, everyone headed over to Mix, which now opens as a bar on Sundays (free admission), and partied until dawn. I left a little early so I wouldn't melt.
Located between Pylon and Apollo in Aoyama is a new Internet bar called Vagabond Off. Produced by interior designer Akira Kado, Vagabond Off opened with free handouts of a CD-ROM that gives you access to Kado's Web site--a bit of a rush job, if all its glitches are any indication. But here you can have a drink, kick back and cruise the Web to background music, if that's your thing. Although computers and conversation strike me as a clumsy mix. This is more of an artsy bar for mature freelance types.
As a Prince of Darkness, Halloween is the most exciting club night of the year for me. I dressed up as Dracula and my friends transformed themselves into cartoon characters, big women, hairy angels, a cactus, the religious guru Sai Baba, nurses, an SM queen and other less explainable creations. Some people asked me if I was, in fact, dressed up--or "did I always look like that?" Thanks. I guess it's time for that beauty sleep.
