NIGHT LIFE LISTINGS

Doctor's Orders
by Phil Miller
What terrible news! The once super-popular Drug Store finally closed down . . . for a week, before re-opening as Bulldog. Not much else has changed there, although with the new name we might see the return of those gung-ho gas-guzzlers who made it the rowdiest, most boorish stock-broker bar in town--wow! All in all, I'm glad it didn't close permanently; even with a name change, it will always be located in one of Tokyo's most interesting buildings, The Wall.
Names were a-changing in Roppongi too. The old Cleo's became the new Circle and the defunct Misterio turned into the new Cleo's. Circle is run by saxophonist Matt Otto, leader of the acid-jazz band Odo. One Friday night, Pat Metheny's band joined in a jam session--what a show! Odo must be one of the best acid jazz groups in town.
Across the street at the new Cleo's, partners Johnny and Pops have created a hip-hop gangsta-rap paradise with a sound system loud enough to shred your underwear. And Pops really knows how to mix a drink. STRONG! If you like it dark, physical and intimate, this is the place for you. If you don't, bring a flashlight and wear a crash helmet.
Then there was the Saturday night I just couldn't stay out late enough. After much consideration I ended up at Flower, where I ran into some of the most interesting beings from outer space that I have ever seen--anywhere. Perhaps I was hallucinating because I was out past my bedtime, but what do you make of over 300 people raving to techno and trance tracks at eight o'clock in the morning, as if the night had just begun? Maybe for Flower people, that is when the night begins.
And the Wednesday evening before the public holiday at Speakeasy, the Plasma event featuring DJ Patrick turned that venue into the hip place to be, not only because there were so few other parties in town, but because it drew one of the most fun, diverse crowds I've seen there.
Unfortunately, I was suffering from more than mere lack of sleep and strange visions. After running my car into a van and having its sumo-wrestler/truck-driver owner sit on me, I was nursing a couple of bruised ribs. Dr. Mimlin, hostess/producer of Plasma, prescribed me a few drinks to kill the pain. So I drank them. And guess what?--in no time I was feeling great. I even forgot that I had any ribs in the first place. Maybe I need a new doctor. Drive carefully!
