TOKYO SLOGAN CONTEST WINNERS
Gordon Engels, for "Tokyo, A Great Place to Drink and Smoke." You're right, Gordon, but we were hoping for something a little less mundane.
Lydia Petsch, for "The Zany City." Also true, but we just can't imagine Governor Aoshima saying that with much panache.
Craig Yamashita, for "The Big Sweaty," "Contents Under Pressure" and "23 Wards and No Warden." A fine multiple attempt. "23 Wards and No Warden" actually received votes from several judges before they were led away.
Craig Stevens, for "Let's Tokyo!"--a sentimental favorite for many, along with the equally popular "For Beautiful Tokyo Life."
Cristina Pallotta, for "See Tokyo and Survive." The optimistic outlook ensured this entry a place among the finalists, rather than one of the many negative ones.
But First Prize in the Tokyo Slogan Contest, and a copy of the Tokyo
Journal Tokyo Night Life Guide goes to Yaeko Kurimata, a
self-employed resident of Edogawa-ku, whose slogan--
captures that spirit of straightforward pragmatism that makes this
city great. Because the adjective "good" was an addendum, it also illustrates
that hesitant pride for which we are famous, and permits the reading: "TOKYO:
The City of Peoples . . . Good." And it is.
Congratulations Yaeko!
