The little guys in theater--the designers, light crew and others--rarely get the acclaim of the big guns like directors and lead actors. Setsu Asakura is the prominent exception. She has been designing mainstream scenic art for the stage since her stint in New York 25 years ago. This month we see the full scope of her stage-scaping powers in a revival of CHIKAMATSU SHINJU MONOGATARI, which earned her a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Designer of the Year Award. "How to transform space so that theater has inherent energy," says Asakura, "is more exciting than anything else." Until 5/27 at Meiji-za.
