NIGHT LIFE LISTINGS
ed. Phil Miller
Mid-Week Highs
by Phil Miller
Strange but true: my friends once had to tie me up and drag me to flashy, trashy Velfarre, but "Oldies Night" on Tuesdays is now pulling almost every late-night party person in town. They call it "Oldies" because of the music, though I have to admit it's pretty recent to my mind: '80s disco à la KC, Boy George, even Judas Priest. This is an event worth going back for, especially if you nab a friendly waiter for a free-admission flyer.
Across the street at Velvet, mid-week clubbing peaks on Thursdays with the event Mimosa. There must be some 1000 people jamming the place by midnight. Producer Decca's secret seems to be to let girls in free and give them hefty (although unadvertised) drinks discounts. Whatever it is, it works, especially on the younger hip-hop and skateboard crowd, some of who I'm sure sneak here after mum and dad have hit the futon. I felt like big brother, but after a few drinks my IQ dropped and I blended in just fine.
Just down the street, Haru, the owner of rock club Rip, has put a new twist on the Ladies Night theme by starting Guys Night Out every Tuesday. Like his Ladies Night on Thursdays, the guys get into the club free and get two free drinks. Haru . . . are you all right? Haru?
And for a change from the crowds and clatter, there's the new Roppongi show club Biburin--a posh and high-tech cabaret that's just opened at the old Crazy Horse, down near the Porsche dealership. Inside, a neon carousel spins in the center of the room, flanked by moving walkways and surrounded by TV monitors. For about Y5000 (including one drink), you can enjoy a superbly choreographed hour of sexy dance and comedy, ranging from an Australian SM queen in a red-leather body suit and a one-of-a-kind geisha/breakdance routine done to hip-hop koto music. Really. Biburin is like a sophisticated Seventh Heaven--with a sense of humor--and it's probably a great spot for business entertaining. After the show was over, it was hard to face reality again in the streets of Roppongi. Wait a second--reality? Roppongi? What am I saying?
